Hraunfossar, One Of The Worlds Most Beautiful Waterfalls

One of my most favorite places in Iceland are Hraunfossar (Lava Waterfalls) and in connect with it are Barnafoss (Children’s Waterfall). Which makes together one of the most beautiful waterfalls worlds, only 1 hour driving from the Capital, Reykjavik. It is very simple to go there but not so many people who know about it, outside Icelanders.

How is the Waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss

Like I said, Hraunfossar waterfalls is a long wall of water cascading over moss-covered lava, falling into the bright turquoise, or milk water depends on which time you are there, water! 900 meter long. When you stand in front of it and look at it, you see too a beautiful landscape mix lava, small trees, and moss.

Hraunfossar, Barnafossar and the place around it were protected 1987.

Above Hraunfossar, in only a few meters walk, is Barnafoss (Children’s fall).  There is a natural stone bridge over it, but we can´t stress enough not to walk on it or close to it. It´s very dangerous, and no need to because it´s very easy to see the waterfall from the superb viewpoint like I said in few meters from Hraunfoss. It is no hiking at all.

Hraunfossar and Barnafoss are hidden gems in Iceland. Even so, I have seen it many times; I simply need to see it again and again. It is something with this place which is not possible to explain; you need to feel it yourself!

In front of the Waterfalls of Hraunfossar

It´s right to mention that Hraunfossar is visible from the road. When you open the door in your car on the parking place, you already hear the relaxing noise from the waterfalls. You had a drive with the side of the Hvítá river (white river) in some around 15-25 minutes, and suddenly you see the beautiful wall of the waterfalls which take you like a magnet to see it. And all the place are the very relaxing atmosphere, so you forget time and location!

History of Barnafoss.

In folk tales of the Barnafoss says that two boys who lived very close to Bjarnafoss (Children’s fall) decided one day, where they were supposed to stay a home, to go to a church where their parents were going. On their way to get their parents, they wanted to go quicker way over the natural stone bridge, but it was dizzy, and they missed their foots over it, fall into the river and drowned. After it, their mother put a spell on the bridge, so it was impossible to over the bridge without drawing.
