The roads in Iceland
But if you want to drive in Iceland, this is an excellent way to prepare. Because you need to have in mind that the roads in Iceland are very different from almost all other countries in Europe. Or maybe not almost but all other countries.
Route 1 or the Ring Road is a national road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,332 kilometres. But many parts of it are narrow looking at roads in many countries; you need to be prepared that sheep can jump on it in some places, the bridge is many one ways so you need to know how to drive in and around, etc. So looking at this videos, you learn the roads and see circumstances which will for sure help you a lot when yourself drive a car in Iceland.
Slowtv has been popular even so it´s not very often. This summer, 19th June, the Icelandic television channel, RUV, had fascinating slowtv. They show the car driving the Ring Route, or route 1 with music from the world famous Icelandic rock band Sigur rós. RUV set up a camera front of the car, so you see the road and traffic with an almost same view as the driver. The song from Sigur Rós, Óvedur, is a new song, but it hadn´t been published at that time. Too, it was not as it will be because they used the music software Bronze as assistant to play parts on the song. It took the parts from different place in the song and put it together on the road second for seconds. So, in the end, it was 24 hours abstract version of the song.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA) have a very helpful link which you can see here.
